3D printed GluonPilot 2 mounting base

General discussions on the Gluon-project that don't fit elsewhere. If required, I will create more subforums.

Well you would, but the movement can be done in-flight as well. Or you do it and you save it to flash.

After some trial and error we have come up with a revised version of the mounting base. The mount now has closed holes. This allows for suspending with short elastics similar to the one linked to in a previous post.

The file is on shapeways.com as "Case Base 1B" and anyone can order them, as many as you wish.

The link to this is

http://shpws.me/pTqp

This is for the GP2 with the inductor on the bottom. The inductor is about 3mm square cube on the bottom of the main circuit board.

A new base will be designed for the later board which has some component layout changes and has the inductor on the upper surface of the main board. This later board is about 1mm different from this version. This version may fit with a bit of cutting. No guarantees.

The file attached is a pdf that when opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader, allows you to view and rotate the part in 3D.

The intention is to now make a wood mold to vacuum form a plastic case that snaps over this base. I will probably make this out of a soda pop or bottled water bottle. I will display a picture of both when the latest part comes from Shapeways.com.

Always impressed to see stuff I can't make myself :-)

How did the "metal-spray shielded" casing go?

Have not tried the nickel rich paint yet. I will try to create an RF shield with the new base and the new vacuum formed cover when it arrives.

I have found an alternate way to create an RF shield. In North America air heating and cooling ducts are sealed with a thin but very sticky aluminum foil tape. It is about 50mm wide.

I have shielded the upper bay on the SkyWalker 1900 fuselage where the ESC usually is placed. I did this by just lining the bottom and sides with this sticky foil tape. I also wrapped the 3 power lines from the ESC to the motor.

In use a flat piece of thin bottle plastic or a piece of plastic used to hold sheets of paper in a 3 ring binder, will be glued to the bottom of the case. A piece of foil tape will be placed over this. This will now RF shield the bottom. The plastic sheet will protect the GP2 from shorting against the foil. In the same way the outside of the vacuum formed top case will be covered with the aluminum foil tape.

This tape is about $10.00 ( maybe 6 or 7 Euro ) per roll and has probably 20 or 30 meters. At least enough for making custom shields of any area of a plane.

Canada Post surprised me today with a delivery. I thought I was dreaming!

The new Base for the GP2 arrived. Below are some pictures showing the GP2 mounted in the base. I will work on the form for the vacuum formed top over the next week. The mounting tabs with holes can be cut off to suit. The base can be screwed to a frame like mounting a servo.

You could also suspend the base using elastic bands through the holes and around screws or wood posts.

Pictures are too large. Have uploaded some to Flickr.

Got some uploaded to here as well.

Nice, you have the same X5 layout as I do :-)

New base printed on a MakerBot 2 printer. Not a very high resolution print but it only took 45 minutes to print. Will experiment with other resolutions as time permits.

This is just to show that a DIY 3D printer can make the Bases for the GP2 mount.

Nice!

I urgently need such a base... and a 3d printer as well :-)
