My funjet is...

Postby penguin » Sat Sep 29, 2012 3:13 pm

not beautiful but functional.

- AXI 2212/9D and YGE30i with PWM and I2C
- Prop APC 7x5
- 2S/2100mAh
- 2,4GHz HOTT
- Unilog2 with HOTT-Telemetrie (Voltage, Current, Airspeed, etc.)
- Gluonpilot-Telemetrie via Wi.232 Transceiver
- Weight: 750gr.

The bird still waits for his maiden...

Hello Rainer,

It does look beautiful! You should see mine: more epoxy than EPP ;)

What is your experience with the wi232? Is it better or cheaper than the XBee?

It looks like an "old" gluonpilot, has it been laying on your shelf all this time ;) ?

Hi Tom,

I use the Wi.232 transceivers now several years with my copters and made positive experiance. Even in very noisy environment like hexcopters and at the same main battery like motors end escs the range is far beyond the visible limit (~1200m with 75% data packets and 57k6 Baud/25mW and 868MHz). Here in germany it's only allowed to fly up to the visible limit (someone told me, this would be possible, but I don't remember his name ;) ).
I have no experiance with XBees. The kit-price with wi.232, adapter board and all the birdseed is ~60,- Euro/piece.

I know it sounds like a bad joke (hello to Björn) but today my Funjet crashed, too.

It was strong wind and gusts and I thought that does not matter to a funjet ;)
Unfortunately, FJ was too slow and the fate took its running. In 29m@45km/h(airspeed!) FJ stalled and crashed:

I thought I could fix the deformations with hot airfan but the foam only went grainy and finally melted.

This one probably will be my next one:

Or even something larger with more storage space?

Sorry to hear about your crash...!

I am surprised the Ultra broke - you must have had good speed coming down...

I have just finished my Ultra2 and it weighs in at 570 grams incl everything except camera. I like the Fujet for its speed and wind handling but otherwise I can recommend a flying wing. At least they can handle a lot more crashes and are easier to launch :)

I just got the MS Composite Swift (800 mm) which I will try with the GP sometime soon.

Is that the "old" Funjet you posted about? Lighter but also more breakable...

Cheers,

Björn

My funjet has taken more beating :-)

I'm sure you can fix it with a lot of epoxy :-)

Or just buy a spare fuselage and exchange the nose...

Hi boys,

The Logfile says ~90km/h @ impact and I pulled elevator fully until impact:

@Björn: Yes, thats the older funjet. I normally build for flying, not for crashing but have to change my opinion (Gluonpilot therefore is not to blame). No, exchanging only the nose is a 'no go' for me. I wouldn't know to cut the two noses exactly enough without filling the remained craps with epoxy

@Tom: You are right, I'll try to repair it with a few kilo epoxy 8-) But seriously, I'll try this.
On the other hand - manual says EPO-foam not to glue with epoxy

What I quite often do:
1) Take 2 or 3 tooth-picks and push them into the broken nose. Make sure it aligns nice with the other half
2) Apply a thick layer of 2-component glue
3) Press together
4) remove excessive glue
5) Press together for 5 minutes or until your muscles are sore :)

They take for the Funjet II-fuselage ~30,- Euro. A new Funjet classic costs ~45,- Euro.
But a grey Funjet II with nose from Funjet classic looks 'funny'

Meanwhile and alternatively, Ive just ordered this plane (will be another thread):

But I'll try to repair the funjet fuselage. Thanks Tom for your help!
