Very strange indeed... I would propose to buy an FTDI cable as well: very cheap and easy!
I use an XBee pro for telemetry, it works fine but the throughput (19200 baud at best?) is too limited to play with it on the bench IMO. It's only practical for GPS and attitude downlink. Maybe I should consider a binairy protocol...
